For the quartet workshops, select a piece according to its difficulty level.

Category A (simplest): Joseph HAYDN: String Quartet in E-flat major Op.33, No.2

Category B (intermediate): Jiří Matys: String Quartet in an Easier Style

Category C (more challenging): Alexander Porfirievich Borodin: String Quartet No.2 in D major


If you come as a quartet, you can bring your own sheet music :) By filling out the registration form, you declare that your playing skills are at least sufficient to manage a Category A piece comfortably. (Not from sheet music :), you will receive the scores upon registration. You also confirm your health is adequate to independently manage the transit from accommodation to the workshop venues and all other aspects of the event’s program.

FAQ


What kind of music will I play?

Most of your time will be spent on chamber music – in quartets, where you’ll play with other enthusiasts, always under the guidance of members of the Janáček Quartet. You can choose from three levels of difficulty. You’ll receive the sheet music after registering, so you can take a look at it at home in advance.


I don’t have my own quartet. What now?

No problem! You’ll meet your fellow players right on the spot. Most musicians come alone… and they’re only alone for the first few minutes :) After that, it’s all about music and new friendships. Will there be an orchestra too? Yes! The program also includes chamber orchestra rehearsals under the baton of Richard Kružík. The orchestra will prepare a program for the final concert.


How can I explore another genre?

This year, on Wednesday, July 2nd, there will be a concert by the band miniBaroshi – Marian Friedl, Martin Kocián, and violinist Jiří Pospěch. The band plays music on the border between folk, jazz, and world music. They’ve released several beautiful albums, received Anděl awards, and much more. The band will arrive early and take those interested to a rehearsal/workshop – and later, even up on stage!


I only studied at a local music school. I’m afraid I won’t be good enough.

Don’t worry – most people who attend Slunohraní are non-professional musicians. The important thing is the willingness to try something new. Slunohraní is not a competition. No one compares themselves to others here – it’s not about performance,

but about the joy of playing and meeting others.


I’m over 50. I’m afraid I’ll be the oldest there.

Not at all! We welcome people aged 18 to 80, and everyone gets along wonderfully thanks to music. Just choose a piece, register, and look forward to a beautiful

musical start to the summer!

JANÁČEK QUARTET



KVARTETNÍ WORKSHOPY, KONCERT



1.5-hour blocks of quartet playing under the guidance of members of the Janáček Quartet, including both current members and a former member, violinist Vítězslav Zavadilík. Work on the quartet repertoire takes place at a reasonable pace, according to the abilities of the individual musicians. The "Janáčkovci" will offer guidance on interpretation and playing technique, introduce you to the art of quartet ensemble playing, mutual perception, and share many valuable tips. The quartets will not be exposed to the stress of public performance on stage, but they may, if they wish, perform at a small informal concert on Thursday morning.

WORKSHOP and CONCERT



Marian Friedl, a multiple Anděl Award winner, is dedicated, among other things, to reviving the playing of forgotten instruments from the Beskydy region and popularizing folk music. In the duo miniBAROSHI, he plays clarinet, folk flutes, bagpipes, kobza, small cimbalom, and other instruments. Together with double bassist Martin Kocián, they present both traditional and original songs rooted in the folk music of the Western Carpathians. Their repertoire is based on released albums such as Divé husy (2016), Beránci a vlci (2016), 11 podob lásky (2020), Ruky na dudách (2021), and Flétny nad Oslavou (2022). Their music is difficult to classify into a single genre – they draw inspiration from folklore, folk, world music, and jazz. As a special guest at Slunohraní, violinist Jiří Pospěch will join them.

SUMMER ORCHESTRA CONDUCTOR



You will have the opportunity to play in a string chamber orchestra composed of all Slunohraní participants. The first orchestra rehearsal will take place right after arrival, on Monday, July 1, 2024. Under the baton of experienced conductor Richard Kružík – a teacher at the Brno Conservatory and a member of the Janáček Quartet – the orchestra will prepare its program for the Festive Final Concert.
